The Association started from very humble beginnings in 1998 with about 10 members to now a membership over 1 700
Members. The Association has played a vital role since its inception in bringing to the public and stakeholders the challenges facing the South African Fuel Retailers.
The Association has without fail proved to be the voice of the fuel retailing industry when it comes to issues like fuel shortages due to strikes or refinery and logistical constraints. The Association in conjunction with other industry players recently successfully concluded a new retail margin determination model commissioned by the Department of Energy. We are very proud that for the first time there is a model which is scientific on which future retail margins will be based on.
The Association also played a crucial role in the concluding of the 2010 Wage Negotiations under the Motor Industry Bargaining Council.
In 2009 when the new card payment regulation was promulgated, the Association played a role in educating the public on the interpretation of the regulation especially with regards to the use of credit cards.
The Association has been invited in key and strategic industry forums to table the views and perspective of retailers. These forums include but not limited to AMEF ( African Minerals & Energy Forums) and the 2010 Oil and Gas Indaba which was hosted by the Minster in Bloemfontein.
The Association has been instrumental in opposing new service station proliferations by using the framework within the Petroleum Products Acts in order to ensure the survival of existing retailers.
